Rufai Oseni, a journalist and public affairs commentator, has weighed in on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, arguing that the moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara expose deeper weaknesses within the ruling political structure at the national level.
Oseni stated that the impeachment threats against Governor Fubara suggest that President Bola Tinubu lacks the political leverage or willingness to protect governors, even those aligned with or connected to the ruling party. According to him, the situation in Rivers highlights internal power struggles, godfatherism, and unresolved party conflicts that have been allowed to escalate unchecked.
He noted that despite Rivers State being politically significant, the crisis has continued to worsen, with lawmakers loyal to opposing interests openly challenging the governor’s authority. Oseni argued that if a sitting governor can face sustained impeachment pressure without decisive intervention, it sends a signal that party loyalty does not guarantee political security.
The commentator further observed that the developments undermine claims of strong party cohesion and central control, stressing that unresolved internal disputes could weaken governance and public confidence. He warned that allowing political battles to dominate governance could distract from pressing issues such as development, security, and economic stability in the state.
Oseni also cautioned that the Rivers situation could set a precedent for similar crises in other states, especially where political godfathers and rival factions wield significant influence. He urged political leaders to prioritize dialogue, constitutional processes, and respect for democratic mandates to prevent further instability.
As tensions remain high, the Rivers crisis continues to draw national attention, with many observers closely watching how the situation unfolds and what it may mean for party politics and governance across the country.
