Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market following continued compliance with a sit-at-home order, warning that the market could face a one-month shutdown if the situation persists.
The decision was taken after authorities observed that traders in the major commercial hub failed to fully resume business activities on a designated workday, allegedly out of fear linked to ongoing sit-at-home practices. The governor expressed concern that repeated closures and disruptions were crippling economic activities and undermining livelihoods in the state.
According to the state government, the closure is intended to enforce compliance with lawful directives and to send a strong signal that economic sabotage will not be tolerated. Officials stated that markets and businesses are expected to operate normally, and any actions that discourage lawful commercial activity would attract firm sanctions.
Governor Soludo warned that if traders continue to observe unauthorized sit-at-home orders or fail to reopen fully, the Onitsha Main Market could be shut for up to one month. He emphasized that such a measure, though difficult, would be necessary to restore order, protect the economy, and discourage intimidation that forces traders to stay away from their shops.
The state government also assured traders of enhanced security, stating that measures have been put in place to protect lives and property. Security agencies have been directed to maintain a strong presence around major markets and commercial areas to reassure residents and business owners.
While some traders expressed concern over potential losses, the government urged them to cooperate, stressing that sustained economic activity is vital for the wellbeing of the state and its people. Authorities reiterated that the administration remains committed to ensuring peace, security, and a stable environment for businesses to thrive across Anambra State.
