INEC Concludes Preparation of 2027 General Election Schedule

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has completed and approved the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, marking a major step in preparations for the next nationwide polls.

The finalized timetable outlines key dates and timelines for all electoral activities, including party primaries, submission of candidates’ names, campaigns, voter education, and the conduct of the presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly elections. INEC stated that the early completion of the schedule is intended to provide clarity for political parties, candidates, security agencies, and voters.

According to the commission, political parties will be required to conduct their primaries within the approved window and submit the names of their candidates in line with the Electoral Act. INEC emphasized that late submissions or failure to comply with the timetable will not be entertained, stressing its commitment to strict adherence to electoral laws and regulations.

INEC also highlighted provisions in the timetable for continuous voter registration, voter transfer, and collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). The commission assured Nigerians that adequate time has been allocated to enable eligible citizens to register, update their details, and fully participate in the electoral process.

In addition, the schedule includes timelines for the publication of provisional and final lists of candidates, commencement and end of campaign periods, as well as election days for the different categories of polls. INEC noted that the staggered structure is designed to improve logistics, enhance security coordination, and reduce operational challenges.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and transparent elections in 2027. It also called on political parties, civil society groups, the media, and the general public to study the timetable carefully and comply with all guidelines.

INEC added that continuous engagement with stakeholders will be sustained to address concerns, improve voter confidence, and ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process as the country moves steadily toward the 2027 general elections.
