Former Kano State governor and prominent political figure, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Kwankwaso, who played a central role in building and strengthening the NNPP ahead of the 2023 general elections, disclosed that his decision followed extensive consultations with his political associates and supporters across the country. He noted that while the party provided a viable platform for his presidential ambition, recent internal developments made it increasingly difficult for him to continue within its structure.
In a statement released to his supporters, Kwankwaso emphasized that his resignation was not driven by personal ambition alone but by what he described as “irreconcilable differences” regarding the direction and leadership of the party. He expressed concern over internal disputes, lack of cohesion, and what he perceived as a departure from the founding ideals of the NNPP.
The former minister also appreciated party members who stood by him throughout his time in the NNPP, acknowledging their loyalty and commitment. He urged his followers, particularly members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, to remain calm and focused as consultations continue on the next political step.
Kwankwaso’s exit is expected to have a considerable impact on the NNPP, especially in northern Nigeria where he commands a strong political base. Analysts believe the move could trigger realignments ahead of future elections, as his supporters may either follow him into a new political platform or influence the dynamics within existing parties.
While he did not immediately announce his next political destination, Kwankwaso hinted that discussions are ongoing and that a clear direction would be communicated soon. He reaffirmed his commitment to national development, democratic values, and the pursuit of policies aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.
Party officials within the NNPP have yet to issue a comprehensive response, but sources indicate that efforts may be underway to manage the situation and prevent further defections.
Kwankwaso remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, and his next move is likely to shape political calculations in the months ahead.
