“NUJ Demands Immediate Apology from Wike Over Threat Against Journalist, Urges Federal Government Intervention”

The Nigeria Union of Journalists has strongly condemned remarks attributed to Nyesom Wike in which he allegedly threatened violence against a journalist, describing the statement as dangerous and unacceptable in a democratic society.

In a firm response, the union called on Wike to issue an immediate and unreserved apology, stressing that public office holders must uphold the rule of law and respect the role of the media. The NUJ noted that journalists play a critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance, and should not be subjected to intimidation or threats.

The body expressed concern that such statements, if left unchecked, could embolden others to act against media practitioners, thereby putting lives at risk and undermining press freedom. It warned that any attempt to silence journalists through fear or coercion would be resisted.

The union also urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive action on the matter, including investigating the incident and ensuring that appropriate steps are taken to prevent a recurrence. According to the NUJ, safeguarding journalists is essential to maintaining democratic values and public trust.

Furthermore, the organization called on security agencies to remain vigilant and provide adequate protection for journalists, especially those covering sensitive issues. It reiterated its commitment to defending the rights and safety of its members across the country.

The development has sparked widespread reactions, with media stakeholders and civil society groups voicing concern over the safety of journalists and the need for leaders to exercise restraint in their public statements.
