2027: ADC Leader Faults Kenneth Okonkwo Over Criticism of Amaechi’s Selection as Atiku’s Running Mate

A prominent leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized Kenneth Okonkwo over his comments regarding the reported selection of Rotimi Amaechi as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a political gathering, the ADC chieftain described Okonkwo’s criticism as premature and unnecessary, arguing that political parties and alliances have the right to make strategic decisions they believe will strengthen their chances at the polls.

According to the party leader, the choice of a running mate is often influenced by several factors, including experience, political reach, governance credentials, and the need to build a broad-based coalition capable of addressing national challenges. He maintained that Amaechi possesses significant political experience and should not be dismissed based on personal opinions or political preferences.

The ADC official further stated that political stakeholders should focus on issues that affect ordinary Nigerians rather than engaging in debates that could distract from discussions on economic development, security, and governance reforms.

Responding to concerns raised about the proposed ticket, the party leader emphasized that democracy thrives on diversity of opinion but cautioned against comments that could create unnecessary divisions within opposition ranks. He called on political actors to promote unity and constructive engagement as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.

The ADC chieftain also noted that electoral success depends largely on a party’s ability to present a credible vision, competent leadership, and practical solutions to national problems. He argued that personalities alone would not determine the outcome of future elections.

While acknowledging the right of individuals to express differing views, he urged politicians and supporters alike to respect internal party decisions and allow democratic processes to run their course. According to him, every political alliance must be given the opportunity to develop its strategy without undue interference.

Political observers say the exchange highlights ongoing debates within opposition circles as parties continue consultations and coalition-building efforts ahead of the next electoral cycle. Analysts believe discussions surrounding leadership combinations and electoral strategy are likely to intensify as the 2027 elections draw closer.

The ADC leadership reiterated its commitment to strengthening democratic participation and ensuring that political discourse remains focused on issues that promote national unity, good governance, and sustainable development.
