PDP Turmoil: Umar Sani Says Governor Fubara’s Absence from Convention Was Due to Restrictive Conditions

The internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new dimension as political commentator and former presidential aide, Umar Sani, offered insight into why Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was noticeably absent from the party’s recent national convention.

Speaking during a political discussion programme, Sani claimed that Governor Fubara was unable to attend due to what he described as “restrictive conditions” surrounding the governor’s current political environment. According to him, Fubara has been operating under intense pressure, which he suggested has limited the governor’s freedom to make certain political moves, including national-level appearances.

Sani explained that ongoing tensions in Rivers State—stemming from power struggles, loyalty battles, and unresolved disputes within the PDP structure—have placed the governor in a position where every political action is closely monitored. He argued that these conditions have effectively “caged” the governor, making it difficult for him to participate in events that might deepen existing conflicts or signal political alignment that could be misinterpreted by stakeholders.

He further noted that Fubara’s absence was not a sign of defiance against the party but a calculated attempt to avoid escalating hostilities. “The environment around him is too sensitive at the moment,” Sani said, stressing that any major political outing could trigger new controversies.

Sani also called on the PDP’s national leadership to address the underlying issues that have caused fragmentation within the party, especially in states where disagreements have lingered. He warned that unless these internal disputes are resolved, the party might continue to struggle with unity ahead of upcoming elections.

Governor Fubara has not issued an official statement regarding his absence, but his close allies have maintained that he remains committed to the PDP despite the political turbulence in his state.

The PDP convention proceeded with the usual formalities, but Fubara’s nonattendance has continued to stir conversation among party members, observers, and supporters who see it as a reflection of deeper challenges within the party’s ranks.
