
Super Eagles defender and team leader, William Troost-Ekong, has revealed that he was fully prepared to take one of the penalties during Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Qualifier playoff showdown.
Speaking after the tense encounter, Troost-Ekong explained that he had made himself available when the coaching crew was selecting players for the penalty shootout. According to him, as one of the senior members of the squad, he felt a responsibility to step forward and contribute during the decisive moment.
He noted that penalty shootouts demand both mental strength and composure, qualities he believes he possesses after years of international experience. Troost-Ekong added that he had practiced spot-kicks regularly in training and would not have hesitated to take one if selected.
The defender expressed confidence in his teammates who eventually took the penalties, stressing that shootouts are unpredictable and often come down to small margins. He also praised the team’s collective effort throughout the match, stating that everyone gave their all on the pitch.
