BREAKING: Court Recesses, Sets 3:50 p.m. for Nnamdi Kanu’s Sentencing

The Federal High Court in Abuja has gone on a short recess after concluding the morning session of proceedings in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The presiding judge announced that the court will reconvene at 3:50 p.m. to deliver the long-awaited sentencing decision, drawing heightened attention from observers and supporters following the case.

During the earlier session, legal teams representing both the Federal Government and Kanu presented their final arguments. The defence team urged the court to consider what it described as violations of Kanu’s rights, insisting that several aspects of the prosecution’s case lacked legal foundation. They argued that the court should dismiss the charges or impose a lenient outcome.

On the other hand, prosecutors maintained that the evidence before the court was sufficient to support the charges brought against Kanu. They argued that his actions, statements, and organisational activities had significant security implications, urging the court to impose an appropriate sentence in line with federal law.

As tensions rose within the courtroom, the judge called for calm and reminded both parties that the court would base its decision strictly on legal merit, not public sentiment. Shortly after this, the judge announced a recess to allow the court to finalise its ruling.

Security around the court premises remains tight, with a noticeable presence of armed personnel. Access has been restricted, and movement in and out of the main courtroom is controlled to prevent disruptions. Several supporters of Kanu, who had gathered outside earlier in the day, expressed anxiety over the outcome but stated confidence that justice would prevail.

Inside the courtroom, observers noted a mix of anticipation and unease among lawyers, journalists, and civil society representatives monitoring the case. Many expect the sentencing to mark a significant moment in one of the country’s most closely watched legal battles.

Court officials confirmed that proceedings will resume exactly at 3:50 p.m., when the judge is expected to read the final verdict and pronounce Kanu’s sentence.

The nation now awaits the outcome, with many watching closely to see how today’s decision may impact ongoing discussions around national unity, security, and political dialogue.
