Lagos Demonstrators Take to Streets Following Death of Iran’s Supreme Leader

Pro-Iranian demonstrators, chiefly members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), took to the streets in parts of Lagos State and other cities to protest the reported death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which was announced amid ongoing regional conflict.

According to eyewitness accounts and local reports, protesters marched with Iranian flags, portraits of Khamenei, and placards expressing solidarity with Iran and condemnation of the military action that reportedly led to his death. Many chanted slogans denouncing foreign involvement in the Middle East and calling for justice, while others offered prayers for the deceased leader and for peace amid escalating tensions.

The demonstrations were part of broader expressions of grief and political sentiment among Shiite Muslim communities in Nigeria, particularly those affiliated with the IMN, who view Khamenei as a religious authority and symbol of resistance. Participants emphasized support for the Iranian people and solidarity with Muslim communities affected by regional conflict, while urging unity and peaceful advocacy.

Security personnel were reportedly deployed in areas of the protests to monitor crowd movement and maintain order. Authorities encouraged peaceful assembly and urged demonstrators to respect public safety while exercising their right to express their views.

The demonstrations reflect how international events, especially involving religious and geopolitical dimensions, are resonating within local communities in Nigeria. They underscore the strong connections felt by some Nigerians to global developments that touch on shared religious identities and concerns over foreign policy and military actions abroad.
