IWD 2026: Oluremi Tinubu and Ondo First Lady Call for Greater Women Empowerment

Oluremi Tinubu and the Ondo First Lady have jointly called for increased efforts to empower women across Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities, support, and resources that enable women to thrive socially, economically, and politically. Their appeal comes ahead of the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations, which focus on gender equality and the advancement of women worldwide.

During a public engagement event, both leaders highlighted the critical role of women in national development and community leadership. They noted that empowering women not only strengthens families and communities but also contributes significantly to economic growth and sustainable development.

Oluremi Tinubu stressed the need for policies that ensure equal access to education, vocational training, and entrepreneurial support for women, particularly in underserved and rural areas. She underscored that removing barriers to women’s participation in business, governance, and leadership positions is essential for achieving a balanced and inclusive society.

The Ondo First Lady echoed these sentiments, emphasizing programs that focus on skill acquisition, financial literacy, and healthcare access for women. She encouraged the private sector, government agencies, and civil society organizations to collaborate in creating platforms where women can enhance their capacities, start businesses, and take active roles in decision-making processes.

Both leaders called on men and community stakeholders to support women’s empowerment initiatives and to actively promote gender equality at all levels. They highlighted the importance of mentorship, advocacy, and awareness campaigns in changing societal attitudes that limit opportunities for women.

They further urged women to embrace leadership opportunities, pursue education and training, and actively participate in social and economic development programs. According to them, when women are empowered, the entire society benefits through improved family welfare, stronger local economies, and more inclusive governance.

As Nigeria marks IWD 2026, the joint call from Oluremi Tinubu and the Ondo First Lady reinforces the urgent need for sustained investment in women’s empowerment initiatives, aiming to create an environment where women can achieve their full potential and contribute meaningfully to national progress.
