Osun Election: Shehu Sani Says Opposition Upset as Adeleke Credits Tinubu for Victory

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the outcome of the Osun State governorship election, highlighting the political reactions that followed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory.

Sani said the opposition was particularly unsettled by Adeleke’s decision to acknowledge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his victory remarks. According to him, the governor’s gesture was politically significant because of the rivalry and political divisions that had characterised the contest.

Adeleke, while addressing supporters after the election, expressed appreciation to Tinubu, alongside other individuals and groups he credited with contributing to the peaceful conduct of the electoral process and his victory.

The governor’s acknowledgment of the President generated discussion within political circles, particularly because Tinubu and Adeleke belong to different political camps. Adeleke is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Tinubu is associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sani described the reaction from the opposition as an indication of the political sensitivity surrounding the election and Adeleke’s post-election comments. His assessment suggested that some opposition figures expected the governor’s victory speech to be framed primarily around the political differences between the two camps.

The Osun election had attracted considerable political attention because of its importance to the balance of power in the state and the wider political implications for the major parties. Adeleke’s victory therefore carried significance beyond the immediate contest between the candidates.

The governor, in his remarks, sought to project appreciation rather than confrontation, recognising the roles played by different stakeholders in the electoral process. His reference to Tinubu was consequently viewed as an attempt to acknowledge the President’s position as the country’s leader, regardless of party affiliation.

The development has also renewed conversations about political relationships in Nigeria, where elected officials sometimes maintain institutional relationships with leaders from opposing political parties.

For Adeleke, the emphasis after the election was on consolidating his mandate and moving forward with the administration of Osun State. His remarks also conveyed a message of reconciliation and governance after a competitive electoral contest.

Sani’s reaction adds another dimension to the political interpretation of the election, particularly regarding how Adeleke’s victory and his relationship with the Federal Government may shape political calculations in Osun and beyond.

The development is expected to remain a subject of political discussion as parties assess the implications of the Osun election, the governor’s victory and the relationships that may emerge between the state government and the Federal Government.
