A wave of fear swept through Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State following a deadly attack by armed gunmen on a rural community, which left at least four people dead while several others remain unaccounted for.
The assault reportedly occurred in the late hours when the attackers stormed the community, firing sporadically and causing residents to flee for safety. Witnesses said the gunmen moved from house to house, setting properties ablaze and forcing villagers to escape into nearby bushes and farmlands.
By morning, the bodies of four victims were recovered, while families continued to search desperately for relatives believed to have been taken or trapped during the chaos. Many residents have since abandoned their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring communities amid fears of a possible return by the attackers.
Local leaders described the incident as devastating, noting that the community had been largely peaceful before the attack. They called on security agencies to intensify patrols in the area and ensure the protection of lives and property. Community representatives also appealed to the state and federal governments for urgent intervention, including humanitarian assistance for displaced residents.
Security operatives were later deployed to the area to restore calm and begin preliminary investigations into the incident. Authorities confirmed awareness of the attack and assured residents that efforts were underway to track down those responsible and prevent further violence.
The incident has once again heightened concerns over insecurity in parts of Benue State, with residents urging decisive action to address recurring attacks and guarantee the safety of vulnerable rural communities.
