The Presidency has strongly defended the position that President Bola Tinubu should be allowed to complete a full eight-year tenure in office, dismissing opposing views from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as unfounded and politically motivated.
In a statement issued by presidential aides, the government emphasized that the current administration remains focused on delivering its mandate to Nigerians and is not distracted by premature political debates ahead of the 2027 general elections. The statement stressed that President Tinubu was elected through a democratic process and is constitutionally entitled to seek and serve a second term, in line with Nigeria’s laws.
Responding directly to Atiku’s recent remarks suggesting a shift in leadership by 2027, the Presidency described such comments as an attempt to create unnecessary political tension. It maintained that governance, economic reforms, and national stability should take precedence over early campaign rhetoric.
Officials highlighted ongoing efforts by the administration to address key challenges, including economic recovery, infrastructure development, security improvements, and institutional reforms. According to the Presidency, these initiatives require continuity and long-term commitment, which reinforces the argument for a complete two-term tenure.
The statement also called on political actors to avoid divisive narratives and instead support policies aimed at national development. It urged stakeholders across party lines to prioritize unity and constructive engagement rather than engaging in what it described as distractions from governance.
While reaffirming confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership, the Presidency noted that the ultimate decision rests with the Nigerian electorate, who will determine the country’s direction in the next election cycle.
The exchange underscores growing political positioning ahead of 2027, as key figures begin to outline their perspectives on leadership and the future of the nation.
