The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered the Nigerian Government to pay N10 million in compensation to journalist Oyekunle following a case involving the violation of his rights during an assault linked to his professional activities.
In its judgment, the regional court held that the treatment meted out to the journalist amounted to a breach of fundamental human rights protections guaranteed under regional and international legal instruments. The court found that the Nigerian authorities failed in their duty to safeguard the journalist and ensure the protection of his rights while carrying out his work.
The case was brought before the court after Oyekunle alleged that he suffered physical assault and intimidation while performing his duties as a journalist. During the proceedings, evidence was presented detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident and the impact it had on his personal safety and professional activities.
After reviewing the submissions from both parties, the court concluded that the actions against the journalist constituted a violation of his rights to personal security, dignity, and freedom of expression. The judges emphasized that journalists play a vital role in promoting transparency, accountability, and democratic governance, and therefore deserve adequate protection from harassment and violence.
As part of its ruling, the court directed the Nigerian Government to pay N10 million as compensation for the harm suffered by Oyekunle. The court also reiterated the obligation of member states to uphold press freedom and protect media practitioners from attacks, intimidation, or unlawful interference in the course of their duties.
The judgment is regarded as another significant decision by the ECOWAS Court in reinforcing the protection of journalists and human rights within the West African region. The ruling further underscores the responsibility of governments to ensure that violations against media professionals are properly investigated and that victims receive appropriate remedies.
