Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, appeared before a Federal High Court in Kaduna for the continuation of proceedings in a case involving allegations of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and fraud during his tenure as governor.
El-Rufai arrived at the court premises in the morning under tight security. Officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), alongside operatives of other security agencies, were present as the matter came up for hearing.
The anti-corruption agency is prosecuting the former governor over allegations that public funds were improperly released and managed during his administration. Prosecutors contend that some projects for which funds were approved were either not executed or were handled in a manner inconsistent with established procedures.
At the hearing, legal representatives for both the prosecution and the defence were expected to present arguments on pending motions before the court. However, proceedings were affected by the absence of some co-defendants linked to the case, leading the court to adjourn the matter for a later date.
El-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations brought against him, maintaining that all actions taken during his administration were lawful and in the interest of the state. His legal team has argued that the charges are unfounded and that the former governor will be vindicated during the judicial process.
The court reiterated the need for all parties involved in the case to comply with procedural requirements to ensure a fair and timely hearing. The matter was subsequently adjourned for the continuation of trial proceedings.
The case continues to attract public attention due to El-Rufai’s prominence in Nigerian politics and his role in the governance of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023. The outcome of the trial is expected to have significant legal and political implications.
