Akpabio Mocks PDP, Urges Wike to Let the Party Fade Away

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has made remarks suggesting that the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its political relevance, urging the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to allow the party to fade away rather than attempt to revive it.

Speaking during a political gathering, Akpabio said he no longer viewed the PDP as a formidable political force, arguing that the party has been weakened by internal divisions, leadership disputes, and the departure of prominent members. He maintained that these challenges have significantly reduced the party’s ability to function as a united opposition.

Addressing Wike directly, the Senate President remarked that efforts to keep the party alive were unnecessary, insisting that its prolonged internal crisis had left it struggling to regain public confidence. According to him, the country’s political landscape has shifted considerably, with newer alliances and realignments reshaping the contest ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpabio also expressed confidence in the strength of the ruling party, stating that it remains focused on governance while preparing for future electoral contests. He argued that political parties must earn public trust through unity, effective leadership, and a clear vision for national development.

The comments have generated fresh political debate, with supporters and critics offering differing opinions on the current state of the PDP and its prospects ahead of the next election cycle. While some believe the party can recover through internal reforms and reconciliation, others argue that resolving its longstanding challenges will require significant restructuring and renewed leadership.
