Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has revealed that he has been consistently engaging with relevant authorities and stakeholders to facilitate the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Speaking during an interaction with journalists, the former Abia State governor explained that his efforts have been ongoing both publicly and behind the scenes, stressing that the matter requires patience, strategic dialogue, and mutual understanding.
Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, said that the concerns surrounding Kanu’s prolonged detention are deeply personal to him because of his long-standing relationship with the Kanu family and his commitment to ensuring peace in the South-East region. He noted that the region has experienced tension, economic setbacks, and social disruptions as a result of the agitation surrounding the IPOB leader’s incarceration.
According to him, achieving Kanu’s release is not a matter of grandstanding but one of persistent negotiation with the federal government, security agencies, and other influential actors. He emphasized that he has made several visits, initiated private conversations, and submitted proposals aimed at resolving the issue in a manner that satisfies legal requirements and promotes national stability.
Kalu also appealed to residents of the South-East, urging them to maintain calm and avoid actions that could worsen the situation. He encouraged youths to focus on constructive engagement and development-oriented activities rather than confrontational approaches.
He reaffirmed his belief that dialogue remains the most effective route to lasting peace and that he will continue to push for a resolution that restores confidence, unity, and harmony in the region.
The senator concluded by expressing optimism that with continued effort, understanding from all sides, and a willingness to compromise, Nnamdi Kanu’s release could eventually be achieved, paving the way for broader reconciliation within the country.
