Osun 2026: Omisore Warns APC Could Lose Election Without a Strong Candidate

Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the party may struggle in the 2026 governorship election if it fails to field a strong, credible, and widely accepted candidate. Omisore made the remarks while addressing party members and stakeholders during a strategic political gathering focused on early preparations for the upcoming polls.

Speaking on the dynamics of Osun politics, Omisore stressed that the electorate has become more discerning, with voters increasingly inclined to support candidates who demonstrate competence, leadership capacity, and a clear development vision. According to him, relying solely on party popularity or federal influence will not be enough to secure victory in 2026.

He noted that internal unity within the APC must be taken seriously, warning that unresolved grievances, factional disputes, and imposition of candidates could weaken the party’s prospects. Omisore urged party leaders at both state and national levels to prioritize transparent processes and extensive consultations as part of their preparations.

The former senator emphasized the importance of presenting a candidate who can connect with the grassroots, command respect across political blocs, and inspire confidence among the youth population. He pointed out that governance performance, public perception, and the ability to offer realistic solutions to local challenges will heavily shape voter decisions in the next election cycle.

Omisore also advised the party to begin intense mobilization early, rebuild structures in areas where support has waned, and adopt strategies that reflect current political realities in the state. He added that ignoring these factors could give rival parties a significant advantage.

Party members present at the gathering acknowledged Omisore’s concerns, with some expressing readiness to engage in broader discussions aimed at repositioning the APC ahead of the governorship race. Others called for unity and discipline, stressing that a cohesive party would stand a better chance of reclaiming power.

As Osun State gradually heads toward another crucial election, political observers anticipate heightened activities, with aspirants preparing to emerge and parties sharpening their strategies. Omisore’s warning is expected to trigger further deliberations within the APC as it seeks to strengthen its footing before the 2026 contest.
