A socio-political forum in Plateau State has publicly distanced itself from claims suggesting it is part of a coordinated effort to prevent Governor Caleb Mutfwang from defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The group described the reports as unfounded and misleading, insisting it has no role in any political manoeuvres targeted at the governor.
In a statement issued after an emergency meeting, leaders of the forum expressed concern that their name was being invoked in what they described as “fabricated political narratives” aimed at creating tension within the state’s political environment. They emphasized that the forum is a non-partisan body focused on unity, peacebuilding, and the general welfare of Plateau residents—not partisan power struggles.
According to the group, the circulating claims appeared to be the handiwork of individuals trying to stir controversy around Governor Mutfwang’s political future. They clarified that the forum has not held discussions, issued directives, or sponsored any moves concerning whether or not the governor intends to join another political party.
The forum’s representatives also highlighted that it respects Governor Mutfwang’s constitutional right to freely associate or align with any political party of his choice. They added that decisions regarding party membership are personal and should not be influenced by external pressure or misrepresentations from interest groups.
Furthermore, the forum cautioned the public to be wary of political actors who deliberately spread misinformation to fuel division ahead of upcoming political events and elections. They urged residents to verify information and avoid amplifying rumours capable of unsettling the state’s political stability.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the forum’s commitment to promoting dialogue, supporting governance initiatives that benefit the people, and maintaining neutrality in political disputes. Members reiterated that they will not allow their platform to be used for political manipulation or to deepen tensions among parties in the state.
The clarification comes amid heightened political speculation in Plateau, where discussions about possible party realignments have been gaining attention. The forum’s denial aims to put to rest any impression that it is engaged in behind-the-scenes lobbying regarding the governor’s political direction.
