Gov Otti Says Moves Are Underway to Facilitate Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has disclosed that he has initiated a series of diplomatic, political, and legal engagements aimed at securing the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The governor made the disclosure during a public interaction with stakeholders, where he addressed concerns surrounding regional peace, political stability, and ongoing security challenges in the South-East.

Governor Confirms Ongoing Efforts

Governor Otti explained that he has been holding discussions with key figures in the Federal Government, including officials in the Presidency, relevant ministries, and national security bodies. According to him, these engagements are part of a coordinated effort to find a lawful and peaceful resolution to Kanu’s prolonged detention.

He stated that while the details of the talks cannot be made public due to their sensitive nature, significant progress has already been made. Otti reassured citizens that he remains committed to ensuring that the matter is resolved in a manner that respects Nigeria’s laws while addressing the concerns of the South-East region.

Appeal for Calm and Patience

The governor urged residents of Abia and the wider South-East to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or undermine the ongoing process. He emphasized that the release of Nnamdi Kanu is not just a political issue but a humanitarian and regional stability matter.

Otti noted that peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement are more effective than violent protests or confrontations. He encouraged supporters of Kanu to allow the legal and diplomatic process to run its course.

Engagement With Community Leaders

As part of his strategy, Governor Otti is consulting traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations to foster unity and maintain a peaceful environment. He emphasized that regional cooperation is essential, especially as conversations continue at the federal level.

The governor reiterated that his administration is committed to protecting the rights and welfare of all citizens, including those who feel marginalized or unfairly treated.

Regional Leaders Increasingly Involved

Otti also revealed that he is not acting alone. According to him, several governors and political stakeholders from the South-East are aligning their efforts to present a unified position to the Federal Government. The goal, he said, is to demonstrate that Kanu’s release could help reduce tensions, stabilize the region, and open doors to broader conversations on development and national unity.

Focus on Peacebuilding

Beyond Kanu’s case, Governor Otti emphasized the broader need for peacebuilding in the South-East. He noted that insecurity, economic hardship, and social tension have worsened due to the prolonged crisis. He believes that resolving high-profile issues like Kanu’s detention could open the way for constructive dialogue among youth groups and government authorities.

Awaiting Federal Response

While Otti expressed optimism, he clarified that the final decision rests with the Federal Government. However, he remains hopeful that the ongoing engagements will yield positive results in the near future.

He concluded by assuring Ndi Abia that he will continue to prioritize peace, justice, and lawful advocacy on issues affecting the state and the entire region.
