Presidency Says Thwarted Benin Coup Highlights Tinubu’s Influence on West Africa’s Stability

The Presidency has stated that the recently foiled coup attempt in the Republic of Benin underscores President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s growing influence and commitment to safeguarding democratic governance across West Africa.

In a statement issued through senior officials, the Presidency noted that the swift regional response to the attempted takeover was a reflection of the collaborative security framework championed by President Tinubu in his capacity as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

According to the Presidency, Tinubu has consistently prioritized political stability, constitutional order, and multilateral cooperation among West African nations. Officials stressed that his diplomatic engagements have helped strengthen early-warning systems, intelligence sharing, and rapid-response mechanisms across member countries.

The Presidency added that the quick suppression of the coup plot in Benin demonstrates the effectiveness of Nigeria’s renewed foreign policy direction, which places emphasis on partnership-driven security. It credited Tinubu’s leadership for encouraging member states to resist unconstitutional power grabs and to reinforce democratic institutions.

Government insiders also highlighted that Nigeria’s influence in the region remains pivotal, noting that instability in any West African nation poses a broader threat to economic growth, security, and humanitarian conditions in neighboring countries.

The statement reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for Benin’s democratically elected government and applauded Beninese authorities for acting promptly to prevent a breakdown of order. It also assured that the Tinubu administration would continue to work with ECOWAS leaders to promote peace, discourage military interventions, and strengthen governance structures across the subregion.

The Presidency concluded that the unsuccessful coup attempt serves as a reminder of the fragile political climate in parts of West Africa, while also highlighting the impact of coordinated regional leadership in confronting such challenges.
