Court Approves Temporary Bail for Malami, Schedules Hearing for January 5

A court has granted interim bail to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, allowing him temporary release while legal proceedings against him continue. The decision was reached after arguments were presented by legal representatives, who appealed to the court to exercise discretion in granting bail pending further hearings.

In delivering the ruling, the presiding judge stated that the bail was granted based on the conditions presented and assurances provided to the court. The judge emphasized that the interim bail does not amount to a determination of the case but is intended to ensure that the defendant remains available for trial while enjoying limited freedom under strict terms.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter to January 5 for continuation of proceedings. On that date, the court is expected to hear further arguments and possibly address substantive issues relating to the case. Specific bail conditions were outlined, including requirements related to sureties, travel restrictions, and regular availability to the court as directed.

Malami, who served as Nigeria’s chief law officer during his tenure, has been a central figure in the case, which has attracted significant public interest due to his former position in government. His legal team maintained that he is prepared to cooperate fully with the judicial process and comply with all conditions attached to the bail.

Following the ruling, Malami expressed appreciation to the court and reiterated his confidence in the legal system. He maintained that he would use the opportunity to adequately prepare his defence ahead of the next hearing.

The case remains ongoing, with the January 5 adjournment expected to mark an important stage in the legal process as the court continues to examine the issues before it.
