Court Sentences Boko Haram Convict to Death Over 2015 Maiduguri Terror Attack

A High Court has sentenced a convicted Boko Haram member to death for his role in a deadly terrorist attack carried out in Maiduguri in 2015, bringing to a close a case that has remained before the court for several years.

Delivering judgment, the trial judge held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that the convict actively participated in the attack, which claimed several lives, left many others injured, and caused widespread destruction of property. The court found that the evidence presented, including witness testimonies and investigative findings, established the defendant’s involvement in the coordinated assault.

According to the prosecution, the attack targeted civilians and public facilities, creating panic across parts of Maiduguri and forcing many residents to flee for safety. Security personnel later arrested the suspect following an intensive investigation that linked him to the terrorist operation.

During the trial, the prosecution urged the court to impose the maximum punishment provided by law, arguing that the gravity of the offence and its devastating impact on victims demanded a firm judicial response. The defence, however, pleaded for leniency, citing personal circumstances and asking the court to temper justice with mercy.

In its ruling, the court emphasized that acts of terrorism threaten national security, undermine public peace, and inflict lasting trauma on innocent citizens. The judge stated that individuals found guilty of such crimes must face the full weight of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

The court subsequently sentenced the convict to death in accordance with the applicable provisions of the law governing terrorism-related offences.

The judgment has been welcomed by many observers as another significant step in the country’s efforts to ensure accountability for acts of terrorism and to deliver justice to victims and their families. Security agencies have also reiterated their commitment to sustaining operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and protecting communities from future attacks.
