Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said that no individual can determine in advance whether the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will act rightly or wrongly in the conduct of future elections.
Speaking on the importance of electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections, Obi stressed that the credibility of the electoral process would ultimately be judged by the commission’s actions rather than public expectations or speculation.
According to him, Nigerians should allow electoral institutions to carry out their constitutional responsibilities while remaining vigilant and committed to demanding transparency, fairness, and accountability throughout the electoral process.
Obi noted that confidence in democratic institutions is strengthened when elections are conducted in accordance with the law and when every vote counts. He added that citizens, political parties, civil society organisations, and election observers all have important roles to play in safeguarding the credibility of elections.
The former presidential candidate urged Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process by registering to vote, remaining peaceful during campaigns and elections, and holding public institutions accountable through lawful means.
He also emphasized that the success of any election depends not only on the electoral commission but also on the commitment of political stakeholders to respect the rules, avoid violence, and accept legitimate outcomes.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum, discussions on electoral reforms, institutional independence, and public confidence in the electoral system are expected to remain central issues in Nigeria’s political landscape.
