The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained the circumstances surrounding the freezing of a bank account linked to the Osun State Government shortly before the state’s governorship election, insisting that the action was based on an ongoing investigation and not influenced by political considerations.
According to the commission, the decision followed intelligence and financial records obtained during the course of a probe into suspected transactions involving public funds. The agency stated that it secured the necessary legal approval before directing the financial institution to place a temporary restriction on the account.
The EFCC maintained that the timing of the action was determined solely by the progress of its investigation and not by the electoral calendar. It rejected suggestions that the move was intended to interfere with the election or favour any political party, stressing that its operations are guided by the law and available evidence.
Officials of the commission further explained that freezing an account is a preventive measure designed to preserve funds that may be relevant to an investigation. They noted that such restrictions are temporary and remain subject to judicial review, adding that affected parties have the legal right to challenge the action in court.
The development has generated political reactions in Osun State, with some stakeholders questioning the timing of the restriction, while others called for transparency and due process. However, the anti-graft agency reiterated that its mandate is to investigate alleged financial crimes without regard to political affiliations or election schedules.
The EFCC assured Nigerians that it would continue to carry out its responsibilities professionally and in accordance with the law, while urging the public not to interpret lawful investigative actions as attempts to influence the democratic process.
