The Police have confirmed the arrest of an Accord Party lawmaker and 146 other individuals described as suspected political mercenaries in connection with activities surrounding the Osun State governorship election.
The arrests were reportedly made as security agencies intensified surveillance and enforcement measures across the state to prevent violence, intimidation, vote manipulation and other forms of electoral malpractice.
According to the police, the Accord Party lawmaker was among those taken into custody during security operations conducted in parts of Osun State. The 146 other suspects were also arrested over alleged involvement in activities considered capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of the election.
The police said the arrests formed part of broader efforts to maintain law and order and ensure that voters could exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.
Security personnel were deployed to strategic locations across the state, including areas identified as potentially vulnerable to political violence. Officers were also tasked with monitoring movements and preventing the unlawful mobilisation of individuals allegedly brought into the state to influence or disrupt the electoral process.
The term “mercenaries” in the police description refers to individuals suspected of being mobilised for political or violent purposes. However, their arrest does not by itself establish criminal guilt, and the allegations against them would be subject to investigation and, where appropriate, prosecution.
The arrested lawmaker and other suspects are expected to undergo questioning as investigators seek to determine their identities, affiliations, movements and alleged roles in the events leading up to or surrounding the election.
The police also reiterated that individuals found violating electoral laws or engaging in violence, intimidation, unlawful possession of weapons or other offences would be dealt with according to the law.
The development comes amid heightened political activity in Osun State, where competing political interests have been campaigning aggressively ahead of the governorship contest.
Authorities have repeatedly urged political parties, candidates, supporters and voters to remain peaceful and avoid actions capable of triggering violence.
Security agencies have also warned political actors against using thugs or organised groups to intimidate opponents or voters, stressing that the credibility of the electoral process depends significantly on the maintenance of peace before, during and after voting.
The arrests are therefore expected to form part of the security agencies’ wider investigation into potential threats to public safety and electoral integrity in the state.
Authorities are expected to provide further information as investigations progress, including details of any charges that may be brought against the suspects.
The police have meanwhile appealed to residents to remain calm, cooperate with security personnel and report suspicious movements or activities through appropriate channels.
