A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter has made an emergency landing on farmland in Benue State following an operation targeted at suspected kidnappers in the area.
The incident occurred while the aircraft was carrying out an aerial operation aimed at supporting ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities in parts of the state.
According to information surrounding the incident, the helicopter was involved in an anti-kidnapping operation when it developed a technical issue that required the crew to make an emergency landing. The aircraft subsequently came down on a farmland in the affected community.
The emergency landing reportedly did not occur as a result of hostile action, while the circumstances surrounding the technical problem are expected to be examined as part of the appropriate assessment by the Nigerian Air Force.
The crew members aboard the helicopter were reported to have survived the incident, with no immediate indication of fatalities arising from the emergency landing.
The operation forms part of broader security efforts involving aerial surveillance and support for ground forces working to locate and apprehend criminal elements operating in Benue and neighbouring areas.
Benue has continued to face security challenges, including attacks by armed groups, kidnapping and other forms of criminality in some communities. Security agencies have consequently intensified operations aimed at protecting residents and restoring stability.
The Nigerian Air Force has played an important role in these operations by providing aerial reconnaissance, surveillance and operational support to security personnel on the ground.
Following the emergency landing, efforts are expected to focus on securing the aircraft and determining the extent of any damage. Technical personnel may also be deployed to assess the helicopter and establish the cause of the malfunction.
Authorities are expected to provide further information as investigations into the incident progress.
The emergency landing has not been reported as a disruption to the wider security operation, and security agencies remain focused on ongoing efforts to tackle kidnapping and other threats to communities across Benue State.
