Security operatives have successfully repelled an attempted ambush in Benue State, dismantling a notorious gang that had been terrorising commuters along key road corridors in the region.
According to military authorities, the troops were on a routine patrol when they encountered signs of suspicious movement along a rural stretch frequently targeted by criminal groups. As the patrol advanced, armed attackers reportedly attempted to spring an ambush, positioning themselves to fire on the military convoy and block the road for possible abductions or robberies.
The soldiers immediately responded with coordinated fire, neutralizing the threat before the attackers could gain control of the area. The swift reaction forced the gang to flee into nearby bushes, leaving behind weapons, improvised barriers, and other items used to block roads and stop vehicles.
Military officials said the operation was part of intensified efforts to restore safety across Benue communities facing repeated disruptions from criminal elements. The gang targeted in this incident had become notorious for staging sudden roadblocks, attacking commercial vehicles, and extorting travellers using makeshift barricades constructed from logs, stones, and metal objects.
Clearing the ambush site, the troops also dismantled hidden checkpoints and escape routes used by the criminals. Patrol teams remained stationed in the area for hours to ensure the road was completely safe before allowing travellers to proceed.
Residents and motorists expressed relief, noting that the route had become increasingly dangerous in recent weeks. Community leaders commended the security forces for responding promptly and urged sustained presence along the affected roadways to deter further violence.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to securing all major transportation routes in Benue and other parts of the country facing similar threats. Commanders emphasized that more patrols, intelligence-led operations, and collaboration with local communities are underway to prevent a resurgence of attacks.
