Former President Goodluck Jonathan has continued to attract political attention ahead of the 2027 general elections as a faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by veteran politician Kabiru Tanimu Turaki insisted that Jonathan remains a loyal member of the party despite growing speculation about his political future.
The faction made the clarification during an internal stakeholders’ meeting where members discussed ongoing alignments and realignments ahead of the next election cycle. According to leaders of the group, there is no official indication that Jonathan has resigned from the PDP or joined any other political platform.
Speaking on behalf of the faction, Turaki said the former president has remained committed to the ideals of the PDP and continues to enjoy respect across different political blocs in the country. He stressed that attempts to portray Jonathan as politically detached from the opposition party were inaccurate and misleading.
The group further stated that Jonathan remains an important figure within the PDP because of his national appeal, democratic credentials, and history within the party. Members argued that his political experience and statesmanship could still play a significant role in shaping the direction of opposition politics ahead of 2027.
The statement also comes amid increasing speculation over possible alliances and coalition talks involving major political actors across the country. While several groups have reportedly shown interest in drafting Jonathan into broader political discussions, the Turaki-led faction maintained that the former president’s identity within the PDP remains unchanged.
Party loyalists at the meeting called on members to remain united and focused on rebuilding the PDP ahead of future elections. They also urged party supporters not to be distracted by rumours surrounding defections and internal disagreements.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 under the PDP platform, has largely maintained a statesman role since leaving office, often focusing on peacebuilding, democracy advocacy, and international engagements. However, his name continues to surface in national political conversations whenever discussions about coalition-building and presidential calculations emerge ahead of major elections.
