The Federal Government has declared Wednesday and Thursday as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration across the country. The announcement was made to allow Muslim faithful adequate time to observe one of the most significant festivals in Islam.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, the government congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the occasion of the celebration, urging citizens to use the period to pray for peace, unity, and national development.
The government also encouraged Nigerians to embrace the values of sacrifice, love, tolerance, and obedience, which Eid-el-Kabir symbolizes. Citizens were advised to celebrate responsibly and continue supporting efforts aimed at promoting harmony and stability within the country.
Security agencies and relevant authorities are expected to maintain adequate security and ensure smooth movement during the holiday period as millions of Nigerians travel to celebrate with family and loved ones.
Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. The celebration is usually marked with prayers, charity, and the sharing of meals among families, friends, and the less privileged.
Government offices, banks, and several businesses are expected to remain closed during the declared holidays, while essential services will continue operations where necessary.
