The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has announced a new executive order restricting motorcycle operations in selected parts of the state as part of efforts to address growing security concerns.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at curbing criminal activities allegedly carried out with the use of motorcycles. According to the state government, security reports indicated that some criminal elements have increasingly relied on motorcycles for quick movement during attacks, robberies, kidnappings, and other unlawful activities.
Under the new order, motorcycle operations will be limited in specific high-risk areas, major roads, and locations identified by security agencies. The government stated that the measure is intended to strengthen public safety and support ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat crime across the state.
Governor Makinde emphasized that the decision was taken after consultations with security stakeholders and community leaders. He noted that while motorcycles remain an important means of transportation for many residents, public security must remain a top priority.
The state government also directed security agencies to ensure strict enforcement of the order while maintaining professionalism in their interactions with members of the public. Violators may face sanctions, including the seizure of motorcycles and possible prosecution in accordance with existing laws.
Residents have been urged to cooperate with authorities and report suspicious activities to relevant security agencies. The government assured citizens that the restrictions are part of broader measures designed to protect lives and property and restore confidence in public safety.
Meanwhile, motorcycle operators and transport unions have called for continued dialogue with the government to ensure that the new policy does not unduly affect the livelihoods of law-abiding riders. Authorities have indicated that periodic reviews of the restrictions may be conducted based on security assessments and developments across the state.
