A prominent political figure, Buba Galadima, has alleged that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is pursuing actions aimed at weakening opposition political parties, while also accusing the National Assembly of Nigeria of failing to provide effective legislative oversight.
Speaking during a public engagement, Galadima claimed that recent political developments indicate increasing pressure on opposition groups and warned that a healthy democracy depends on the existence of strong and independent political parties capable of holding the government accountable.
He further argued that the National Assembly should act independently by scrutinising executive decisions and ensuring that government policies and actions remain within the bounds of the Constitution. According to him, the legislature has a constitutional responsibility to serve as a check on executive authority in the interest of the Nigerian people.
Galadima called on political stakeholders, civil society organisations, and citizens to remain committed to democratic principles, stressing the importance of protecting the rule of law, freedom of association, and the rights of all political parties to participate freely in the country’s democratic process.
He maintained that strengthening democratic institutions is essential for national development and urged leaders across the political spectrum to prioritise dialogue, transparency, and accountability over partisan interests.
There has been no immediate official response from the Presidency or the National Assembly regarding Galadima’s allegations. The remarks are expected to generate political debate as discussions continue over governance, institutional independence, and the future of Nigeria’s democratic system.
