Many Feared Killed as Suspected Herdsmen Carry Out New Attacks in Benue Communities

Several people are feared to have lost their lives following fresh attacks by suspected herdsmen on communities in Benue State, triggering panic and forcing many residents to flee their homes in search of safety.

According to community sources, the attacks reportedly occurred during the late hours of the day when armed assailants invaded affected settlements, shooting sporadically and setting parts of the communities ablaze. Residents described scenes of confusion as families abandoned their homes and farms to escape the violence.

Local leaders expressed concern over the recurring nature of such attacks, noting that the incidents have continued to threaten agricultural activities and economic livelihoods across several parts of the state. Many displaced persons were said to have sought temporary shelter in neighboring communities and public facilities.

Security personnel were reportedly deployed to the affected areas to restore order and prevent further escalation of violence. Search and rescue efforts were also said to be ongoing as authorities worked to determine the number of casualties and assess the extent of damage to properties and farmlands.

Community representatives called on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable settlements and ensuring that those responsible for the attacks are identified and brought to justice.

The renewed violence has once again raised concerns over the persistent security challenges facing farming communities in Benue State, a region widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s major agricultural hubs. Stakeholders have continued to advocate for stronger security measures, improved intelligence gathering, and sustainable conflict resolution mechanisms to address the root causes of such incidents.

As investigations continue, residents remain hopeful that decisive action by authorities will restore peace and enable displaced families to return safely to their communities and resume their normal activities.
