Nationwide Rise in Cooking Gas Prices Deepens Cost of Living Concerns in Nigeria

Nigerians are facing renewed economic pressure following another increase in the price of cooking gas across several parts of the country, a development that has sparked concerns among households and small business owners already struggling with rising living costs.

Market surveys conducted in major cities revealed that the cost of refilling liquefied petroleum gas cylinders has risen significantly in recent weeks, with dealers attributing the increase to supply challenges, transportation costs, foreign exchange instability, and growing operational expenses.

Many residents expressed frustration over the latest hike, noting that cooking gas was once considered a more affordable and cleaner alternative to kerosene and firewood. However, the steady increase in prices has forced some families to reduce usage or seek cheaper cooking methods.

Food vendors, restaurant operators, and small-scale businesses that rely heavily on gas for daily operations also lamented the situation, warning that the development could lead to higher food prices and additional economic hardship for consumers.

Industry stakeholders explained that fluctuations in global energy prices, import-related expenses, and distribution costs continue to impact the domestic market. Some marketers also cited inconsistent supply and rising logistics expenses as major factors driving the increase.

Consumers have called on the government to introduce measures aimed at stabilizing the market and making cooking gas more affordable for ordinary citizens. They argued that access to clean cooking energy is becoming increasingly difficult for low-income households.

Economic analysts warned that persistent increases in the prices of essential commodities, including cooking gas, could further weaken purchasing power and worsen inflationary pressure across the country.
