Presidency Raises Alarm Over Babachir Lawal’s Remarks on Atiku

The Presidency has reacted strongly to recent comments made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, regarding former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing the remarks as troubling and capable of raising concerns within the political space.

The reaction followed a series of allegations made by Lawal after his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Lawal accused the party of conducting primary elections that were allegedly manipulated in favour of Atiku Abubakar and his political allies. He further questioned the credibility of the process and expressed doubts about Atiku’s suitability for leadership.

Responding to the development, the Presidency said the statements coming from a prominent political figure and former ally of Atiku should not be ignored. According to the Presidency, the allegations raise serious questions about internal democracy within opposition ranks and could have wider implications for political stability if left unaddressed.

Lawal had announced his departure from the ADC, claiming that the party’s primaries were massively rigged in favour of Atiku. He alleged that election outcomes were altered to ensure victory for preferred candidates and stated that he could no longer remain in a political platform he believed lacked transparency.

The former SGF also vowed to oppose Atiku’s future political ambitions, insisting that Nigeria deserves a leadership process built on fairness and credibility. His comments have sparked fresh debate within political circles as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.

Meanwhile, supporters of Atiku have dismissed the allegations, maintaining that the party’s primary election reflected the wishes of members across the country. They argued that the accusations were not backed by evidence and described them as the reaction of a dissatisfied party member.

Political observers believe the public exchange between the Presidency, Lawal, and Atiku’s camp could further intensify political realignments as preparations for the next presidential election continue.
