The National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has clarified why former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso would not be required to take an anti-defection oath being introduced for members and political leaders within the coalition.
According to the coalition’s leadership, the exemption is based on the unique political status and strategic importance of both leaders, who are currently engaged in broader consultations aimed at strengthening opposition cooperation ahead of future political contests.
Speaking on the issue, officials of the coalition explained that the anti-defection commitment was designed primarily for individuals who have formally joined the organization and accepted leadership or membership positions within its structure. They noted that Obi and Kwankwaso are participating as respected political stakeholders whose involvement remains subject to ongoing negotiations and mutual agreements.
The coalition maintained that imposing the oath on individuals who have not yet formally integrated into its operational framework could complicate efforts to build a wider alliance capable of attracting support from diverse political groups across the country.
