President Tinubu Approves Additional Six-Month Service Extension for Customs Chief

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, allowing the country’s top customs official to remain in office beyond the previously scheduled end of service date.

The decision is expected to ensure continuity in the implementation of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service, particularly in areas relating to revenue generation, trade facilitation, border security, and modernization of customs operations across the country.

Government officials familiar with the development indicated that the extension was granted to enable the Customs leadership to consolidate key initiatives already underway. These initiatives include the deployment of advanced technology systems, strengthening anti-smuggling operations, enhancing customs procedures, and improving collaboration with other security and trade agencies.

The Nigeria Customs Service has in recent years intensified efforts to increase revenue collection for the federal government while combating the illegal movement of goods through the nation’s borders. The agency has also pursued policies aimed at improving efficiency in cargo clearance and supporting legitimate trade activities.

The additional six-month tenure is expected to provide stability within the organization as critical projects and strategic reforms approach important stages of implementation. Stakeholders in the maritime, logistics, and trade sectors are anticipated to closely monitor developments during the extension period.

The Presidency expressed confidence in the Customs leadership’s ability to sustain progress and maintain operational effectiveness. Analysts believe the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to ensuring continuity in key government institutions while ongoing reforms are completed.

With the extension now in effect, the Comptroller-General is expected to continue overseeing the agency’s activities, including revenue collection, border management, anti-smuggling enforcement, and modernization programs designed to strengthen Nigeria’s trade and customs administration framework.
