Supporters loyal to former President Goodluck Jonathan drew significant attention at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention on Saturday, as they openly rallied support for Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed to emerge as the party’s vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, made up of former political aides, youth coordinators and long-standing associates of the ex-president, arrived the venue in large numbers, displaying banners and chanting solidarity songs. Their presence quickly became one of the most noticeable developments at the convention, with many delegates pausing to observe the growing movement.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the event, members of the group described Bala Mohammed as a “bridge-builder” with national appeal and a close ally of Jonathan, qualities they said would strengthen the party’s ticket. They argued that the political climate ahead of 2027 required a running mate capable of unifying diverse interests across the country.
Though the PDP leadership has not officially announced any zoning arrangement or made decisions regarding its presidential team, the open show of support by Jonathan’s loyalists added a fresh layer of intrigue to the internal dynamics of the convention.
Party officials noted that such displays of preference are common during major gatherings, but emphasized that decisions on candidates would follow due process and wide consultations.
As the convention progressed, the activities of the pro-Jonathan group continued to spark conversations among delegates, signalling that the contest for key positions in the 2027 cycle may be taking shape earlier than expected.
