Peter Obi Decries Insecurity in Adamawa, Anambra and Sokoto, Calls Nigeria a Nation in Constant Grief

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow over the rising incidents of insecurity across parts of the country, describing Nigeria as a “nation in constant grief” following recent attacks in Adamawa, Anambra and Sokoto States.

Obi, in a strongly worded statement, said the continuous loss of innocent lives has become unbearable and reflects what he called a “systemic failure in leadership, intelligence coordination, and prioritization of citizens’ safety.” He noted that the tragedies occurring in different regions point to a national security structure that needs urgent overhaul.

According to Obi, the violent incidents in Adamawa, the killings and kidnappings in Anambra, and the renewed attacks in Sokoto highlight a disturbing pattern where communities across Nigeria now live in fear. He emphasized that no part of the country is insulated from threat, stressing that insecurity has evolved into a nationwide crisis demanding immediate and decisive government action.

The former governor lamented that Nigerians have become accustomed to receiving news of deaths almost daily, a situation he described as “unacceptable for any country aspiring to progress.” He urged government authorities at both federal and state levels to prioritize citizen protection as their foremost responsibility.

Obi called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security architecture, including improved intelligence gathering, better-equipped security agencies, and strengthened community policing frameworks. He noted that security reforms must be matched with economic and social interventions that address the root causes of violence such as poverty, unemployment, and weak governance.

He also sympathized with families affected by the recent incidents, saying their pain reflects a much larger national tragedy. Obi urged Nigerians not to lose hope but to continue demanding a country where lives and property are valued and protected.

Reaffirming his long-standing advocacy for restructuring and a more efficient governance model, Obi stated that Nigeria cannot achieve stability or meaningful development unless the safety of its citizens is guaranteed. He called on national leaders to treat the worsening insecurity as an emergency that requires coordinated, transparent, and measurable action.
