Residents of several communities in Katsina State are reportedly living in fear after armed groups allegedly imposed a N10 million levy on villages despite ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts in parts of the region.
Local sources disclosed that the gunmen delivered threats to community leaders, warning that failure to meet the financial demand could lead to fresh attacks, kidnappings, and destruction of property. The development has heightened tension across affected areas, with many villagers expressing concern over their safety and the fragile security situation.
According to residents, the armed groups demanded that the money be raised collectively by the communities within a specified period. Some villagers said the demand has placed additional hardship on families already struggling with economic difficulties and insecurity.
Community leaders were said to have held emergency meetings to discuss possible responses, while appeals have reportedly been made to security agencies and government authorities for urgent intervention.
Security operatives are believed to have intensified surveillance in parts of the affected local government areas as authorities continue efforts to prevent further violence and restore confidence among residents.
