The Senate has condemned the recent attacks targeting Nigerians living in South Africa, expressing concern over the safety and welfare of citizens residing in the country. Lawmakers described the incidents as disturbing and called for urgent measures to prevent further violence against Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
During plenary, senators stressed that every Nigerian, regardless of where they live or work, deserves protection under international law and should be able to carry out legitimate activities without fear of intimidation, discrimination, or violence. They noted that repeated reports of attacks have continued to raise anxiety among affected families and communities both in Nigeria and abroad.
The Senate urged the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in South Africa, to intensify engagement with the South African authorities. The lawmakers called for firm diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring the safety of Nigerians and strengthening cooperation between the two countries on issues affecting citizens.
The lawmakers also requested that the South African government provide clear assurances that Nigerians living within its borders would be protected. They emphasized the need for swift investigations into reported attacks, the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, and adequate support for victims.
According to the Senate, Nigeria and South Africa have long maintained strong diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties, making it important for both nations to work together in addressing any challenges capable of straining their relationship. The lawmakers stated that protecting the rights and dignity of citizens should remain a shared priority.
The Senate further encouraged Nigerians living in South Africa to remain law-abiding, cooperate with local authorities, and promptly report any threats or incidents through the appropriate diplomatic channels. It also urged Nigerian community leaders to continue promoting peaceful coexistence while maintaining regular communication with the Nigerian High Commission.
In its resolutions, the Senate reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerians at home and abroad and called on all relevant government agencies to closely monitor the situation. The lawmakers expressed hope that sustained diplomatic engagement and decisive action by the South African authorities would help restore confidence and guarantee the safety of Nigerians living in the country.
